What makes theatre so magic and why is Shakespeare still relevant?

When an alarm is deliberately set off during their GCSE drama exam, a group of students find themselves in detention. As they struggle to navigate the seemingly endless tasks they’ve been set as punishment, questions are raised. Who set off the alarm and why? Will they ever get out of this detention? Will it cost them their GCSE? And why is Shakespeare still so popular?

So begins a meta deconstruction of the play as we move from classroom to theatre, artifice to reality. The performers switch between their characters and their real selves as they interrogate Shakespeare, the canon, the education system, the nature of theatre, and the world itself. They begin to wonder whether the classics really are that classic, or whether we might need to tell a different story altogether....

Recommended audience age: 7+

Everyone, regardless of age, must have their own ticket to enter the theatre. Children under the age of 3 will not be admitted. Latecomers may not be admitted until a suitable break but we cannot guarantee admittance into the performance.

South Side Theatre Academy are on the lookout for 15-18 year olds take part in an unforgettable opportunity, performing at the Lyric Hammersmith in 'Macbeth Macbeth Macbeth Macbeth Macbeth'!

Macbeth Macbeth Macbeth is a National Theatre Connections production, performing at both our home studio theatre and at the Lyric Hammersmith in Spring 2026.

This is an incredible opportunity to work on a brand new play and perform at a huge London venue!

Be a part of our award-winning Weekly Theatre Academy as rehearsals kick off this November in our Thursday Young Company class.

To join the cast, book a free trial class in our Thursday Young Company (7:30-9pm at Tolworth UR Church).

AUDITIONS & REHEARSALS

Rehearsals take place within our Weekly Theatre Academy classes, for an hour and a half a week. Across the first few weeks of term, our creative team will work with the casts to explore the story, characters and themes in our workshop auditions, where everyone will be given the chance to showcase what they can do. Students will given the opportunity to perform a selection of scenes following these workshops for their audition. Following this, casting will be announced. NT Connections plays are hugely ensemble based so there will be loads for everyone to do. We then get to work with rehearsals from November 2025!

JOIN THE CAST

Connections is the National Theatre’s annual, nationwide youth theatre festival, celebrating the creativity and talent of young people across the UK.

Each year, Connections commissions a selection of brand-new plays for young people to perform, pairing some of the UK’s most exciting writers with the theatre-makers of tomorrow. We work with over 250 youth companies and more than 6,000 young people annually from every corner of the UK. Every group will then transfer their production to a Partner Theatre Festival between March – May 2026, where they will perform on a professional stage. Finally, a select number of groups (one for each play) are invited to perform at the Connections Summer Festival (June 2026): a final celebration, which spotlights each play and champions the incredible work created throughout the year.
